ISBN - INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBERING
ISBN, which stands for International Standard Book Numbering, is the standard way of indexing not only book titles but also
their various publication formats (i.e. hardcover, paperback, audio cassette, CD-ROM, etc.). Each edition, binding, and medium receives a unique ISBN, based on a book publisher's ISBN Publisher Prefix.
The US ISBN Agency is responsible for the assignment of ISBN Publisher Prefixes - it assigns ISBN Publisher Prefixes to publishers located in the United States or publishing within the United States.
The US ISBN Agency address is:
U.S. ISBN Agency
630 Central Avenue
New Providence, NJ 07974
Tel: 877-310-7333
Fax: 908-219-0188
Each US ISBN Publisher Prefix is unique to a publisher.
The US ISBN Agency also supplies a list of Bookland EAN Bar Code Film Master Suppliers and hyphenation instructions and provides information on other related resources which publishers may require, including Cataloging in Publication program (CIP), Library of Congress Catalog Control Number (LCCN), International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), PUBNET, and the Book Industry Study Group (BISG).
Palm Publishers handles ISBN for each book that it publishes. Palm Publishers charges $25.00 per ISBN for this service. A minimum of 2 ISBNs are necessary per each book (i.e. eBook and paperback), so the total is $50.00.
However, if you wish to save money and obtain your own ISBN Publisher's Prefix (i.e. you have multiple books/a minimum of 10 titles to publish and wish to self-publish), you may CLICK HERE to obtain a mail-in copy of the US ISBN Application (this will open a new window in your browser with a print-ready copy of the US ISBN application form).
